It is said that, like many of his stories, Andersen has based the little mermaid on his own life. He wrote the story after a close friend, Edvard Collin, married. Anderson also had written love letters to Collin, but his romance was never answered. Anderson was also inspired by another mermaid story, Undine.
In Copenhagen you can find the statue of the little mermaid, which is a popular tourist attraction. The statue was commissioned by Carl Jacobsen, who saw the Royal Danish Ballet perform a ballet based on the story in Copenhagen. Edvard Eriksen sculpted the statue based on ballet dancer Ellen Price, who played the little mermaid in 1909. On 23rd August 1913 the statue was gifted to Copenhagen.
